49. The Launch of a Growth Academy App Under a Universe of Stars and Diamond Teams with Angie Herbers, Founder and CEO of Herbers & Company

We’re so thrilled and honored to welcome Angie Herbers to In the Suite podcast.

Many words describe Angie Herbers – Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Herbers & Company, a columnist, influencer, and speaker. She has also been honored by the Investment Advisor as one of the “Top 25 Most Influential People in the Advisory Industry” in 2007, 2013, and 2015. In addition to her professional achievements, Angie is a humble, giving, inspiring, and an extraordinary person with an incredible journey.

Her journey begins in Western Kansas. Angie was born into a loving and protective family, and she is the middle child in a family of three.  As she states, she ‘grew up in the stars.’ She lived on a 10,000 acres big ranch and remembered running around butterflies and dragonflies. She expresses how living in nature made her feel in tune with the universe.

Angie admits that while she learned many diverse skills, including sports, playing various instruments, and art, she was not so great at school.  In 8th grade, she was put in the class of Applied Mathematics in which she learned how to run businesses, among other skills. As a result, with the support of her grandfather, who was a long-time entrepreneur, inventor, and engineer, Angie built her first business by the age of 14! What started as one concession stand, turning into 6!

Angie was at the top of her game. She was financially independent, doing well at school, and she had won various awards as a track jumper.

A couple of weeks before Angie’s high school graduation, an unexpected change of events, turned her life around. She lost her mother in a car accident. Not only did it change her internally, but it changed her relationship with money and set her on the path to her career today. What followed was an extraordinary journey to emotional strength and professional success.

In Angie’s story, listeners will understand how simple acts of kindness and encouragement can help a person push beyond her skills and talent. With the support of her father and the help of a couple of great mentors, despite the grief, Angie was able to get into the university of her choice (Kansas State University), win a state-level competition in the advisory industry that was sponsored by American Express and landed her first job at Garrett Planning Network.

Having won the competition, Angie felt the pressure of becoming a financial advisor, but she followed her heart. In response to advisors’ growing demand for independent and objective practice management growth help, Angie started her consulting firm Herbers & Company to serve as the trusted consultant to the leaders of the financial advisory industry.

As a result of the misinformation available, Angie found Herbers Academy, a financial advisory growth training platform that provides subscribers with the most critical resources and knowledge required to promote growth within an advisory firm. And just this year, the company launched an app version so that financial advisors can learn on the go!

In this podcast, Angie’s nostalgic narrative will take the listeners on an extraordinary journey to emotional strength and professional success. We will learn about what made her establish her own company instead of taking a position at a big firm. We will also learn about the leadership team at Herbers & Company and the concept of Diamond Teams. At each stage, you’ll discover a passion for education and helping individuals achieve greatness.

From our conversation with Angie, below are the top takeaways:

1. Leadership is a Continuous Process: This statement is powerful, especially coming from a highly respected leader in the financial industry.  There is no single best style to leadership, and you evolve with time.

2. The Power of Encouragement:   When you are no longer competing and comparing, the strength of the team and encouragement can make a significant and long-lasting impact. It helps build the confidence to push forward .

3. Don’t Limit Your Answers: Angie states that people are hard on themselves.  You do not have to have an answer to everything. All you need to do is show up, ask yourself what matters, and what can we do better. If you focus on these two questions, without a doubt, you will hit the stars.
